What is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer is a malignant disease that begins in the tissues of the lungs. It develops when abnormal cells grow and divide uncontrollably and may eventually form a tumor.

Lung cancer can spread from the lungs to other parts of the body. There are two broad categories of lung cancer: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC).

Common Symptoms

Persistent Cough

A cough that does not go away or progressively worsens may require medical evaluation.

Shortness of Breath

Diagnosis & Staging

Diagnosing lung cancer usually involves imaging, tissue sampling when appropriate and assessment of the extent of disease. The exact tests depend on the individual situation.

CT imaging provides detailed pictures of the chest and can help identify lung masses, enlarged lymph nodes and other abnormalities.

PET imaging may help evaluate areas of increased metabolic activity and can assist in assessing whether cancer has spread.

A tissue sample is examined by a pathologist to confirm cancer and determine its specific type.

Molecular Testing

Staging: After diagnosis, doctors determine how extensive the cancer is. Staging information helps guide treatment decisions and may include evaluation of the lungs, lymph nodes and other organs.

Lung Cancer Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type and stage of lung cancer, molecular characteristics, overall health and individual treatment goals. Different treatments may be used alone or in combination.

Surgery may be used for selected people with localized or potentially operable lung cancer. Depending on the tumor and lung function, surgery can involve removing part of a lung, a lobe or, in selected situations, an entire lung.
Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to damage cancer cells. It may be used as part of treatment for localized disease, after surgery in selected cases, or to control symptoms or areas of advanced disease.
Chemotherapy uses medicines that circulate through the body to destroy or slow the growth of cancer cells. It may be used before or after surgery, with radiation, or for advanced lung cancer.
Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. It is used for selected patients depending on the type, stage and biomarker characteristics of the cancer.
Targeted therapies are medicines designed to act on specific molecular changes that help cancer cells grow. Molecular testing can help determine whether a person may benefit from a particular targeted treatment.
Depending on the cancer type and stage, doctors may combine treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and surgery to create an individualized treatment plan.
Palliative and supportive care focuses on symptom management, comfort, emotional wellbeing and quality of life. It can be provided alongside cancer treatment at any stage when appropriate.
