Common Types of Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the cancer's risk group, grade, stage, PSA level, imaging and biopsy findings, overall health and personal preferences. Some prostate cancers can be monitored closely, while others require active treatment.

Active surveillance may be appropriate for some people with low-risk or favorable-risk prostate cancer. It involves regular monitoring using clinical assessments, PSA testing, imaging and, when appropriate, repeat biopsy, with treatment initiated if the cancer shows signs of progression.
Radical prostatectomy involves removing the prostate and is a treatment option for selected localized prostate cancers. Surgery may be performed using open or minimally invasive approaches depending on the clinical setting and surgical expertise.
Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to target prostate cancer cells. Depending on the cancer's characteristics, radiation may be given externally or through selected internal radiation techniques such as brachytherapy.
Hormone therapy, also called androgen deprivation therapy, lowers or blocks male hormones that can stimulate prostate cancer growth. It may be used for advanced disease or together with radiation in selected higher-risk cancers.
Chemotherapy uses medicines that circulate through the body to destroy cancer cells or slow their growth. It may be considered in selected patients with advanced or metastatic prostate cancer.
Immunotherapy can help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. Its use in prostate cancer is generally limited to selected situations based on disease characteristics and previous treatments.
Targeted medicines are designed to act on specific biological pathways or genetic changes. They may be considered for selected advanced cancers when appropriate molecular findings are present.
